Jolly Foul Play by Robin Stevens , 347 pages. Simon and Schuster Inc., 2016. $18. Language: G; Mature Content: PG (some LGBT content); Violence: PG BUYING ADVISORY: MS - ADVISABLE AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE It’s a new school year and Daisy and Hazel are back with three successful cases solved ready for new adventures and to see old friends.  Unfortunately, the new year isn’t starting out all that great. The head girl, Elizabeth, is is not a nice person, and she has her followers, the Five, keeping the other girls in line, which means a lot of yelling, intimidating, and terrorizing.  On the night of the annual bonfire, there is music, food, and games plus a much needed break after the stress of the first few weeks of school. The evening comes to a halt when Elizabeth is found dead. Once again Daisy and Hazel have a mystery to solve, and it appears that someone at the school is responsible, probably one of the Five.  With the help of their dorm mates, the Wells and Wong Detective Society

The Sands of Shark Island by Alexander McCall Smith - ADVISABLE

The Sands of Shark Island (School of Tobermory, #2) by Alexander McCall Smith , 243 pages.  Delacorte Press, 2016. $16  Content: G   BUYING ADVISORY: EL, MS – ADVISABLE   AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE    The school class on the ship Tobermory has a short break from the ship.  The McTavish kids take their friends home with them and have a close call while helping their parents drive a submarine.  After they are on land the friends have an adventure trying to evade Tanya’s mean aunt and uncle.  When returned to the school ship, they go on a crazy trip to the Caribbean and meet new friends and battle old foes.   I think this book is a fun, clean and enjoyable read.  I like the little bit of mystery and the good values shared by this group of friends.  There are fun little illustrations in each chapter and some interesting facts about sailing at the back.   C. Trouble Never Sleeps by Stephanie Tromly - ADVISABLE

Image
Trouble Never Sleeps (Trouble is a Friend of Mine, #3) by Stephanie Tromly, 300 pages.  Kathy Dawson Books (Penguin), 2018.  $18.   Content: Language: PG-13 (30 swears); Mature Content: PG-13; Violence: PG-13.   BUYING ADVISORY: MS, HS – ADVISABLE   AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH  Zoe and Digby are still trying to find Digby’s sister who was kidnapped.  They have made a deal with a man who claims to know where Digby’s sister is, but first Zoe and Digby will have to break federal laws to trade information to get the location of Digby’s sister.  Also, there is a carryover problem with the football steroid situation and Digby and Zoe manage to find themselves in trouble again.   I enjoy this series because of the funny dialogue and kooky behavior of the characters.  I like that this final book had resolve but wish there were going to be more books in the series because they are so entertaining.  The mature content is make-out sessions and the violence is physical fighting and impending violence.

Trouble Makes a Comeback by Stephanie Tromly - ADVISABLE

Trouble Makes a Comeback (Trouble is a Friend of Mine, #2) by Stephanie Tromly, 298 pages.  Kathy Dawson Books (Penguin), 2016.  $18.   Content: Language: PG-13 (38 swears); Mature Content: PG-13; Violence: PG-13.  BUYING ADVISORY: MS, HS – ADVISABLE   AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH    Zoe misses Digby ever since he disappeared after their kiss a few months ago, but she has decided to move on and has a jock boyfriend, two new besties, and a “normal” high school experience.  Except, Digby comes back and Zoe can’t help herself, she gets drawn into Digby’s mystery again.  Zoe and Digby along with their friends also come across a steroid drug problem within the high school football team and find themselves in the middle of that mess as well.   In typical Digby and Zoe fashion, this book is full of laughs, suspense and a bit of romance.  I love this series because it makes me laugh and the story line is quick and unexpected.  Zoe and Digby are mini-Veronica Mars type teens and they manage to uncov

Mason Falls Mysteries series - ADVISABLE

Image
The House by Raelyn Drake (95 pages) and Behind the Screen by Israel Keats (97 pages).  HI/LO.  Darby Creek (Lerner), 2018.  $8 (paperback) Content: G  BUYING ADVISORY:  MS - ADVISABLE AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE Two titles in the Mason Falls Mysteries series.  In The House, three friends enter a house that is supposed to be haunted and are scared out of their wits; then they wonder if something is fishy.  In Behind a younger sister thinks her older sister is acting sneaky when she finds out her sister has a boyfriend, but they’ve never actually met face to face. The House was the best of the two, but both were nicely written little books.  For students who need a HI/Lo book, this is a pretty good option. Cindy, Middle School Librarian, MLS

Call of the Wraith by Kevin Sands - ADVISABLE

Image
Call of the Wraith (Blackthorn Key #4) by Kevin Sands , 494 pages.  Simon and Schuster, 2018.  $19 Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (some fighting) BUYING ADVISORY:  EL, MS - ADVISABLE AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH On his way back from France, Christopher Rowe and his friends are caught in a huge storm and tossed up on England’s shores – only Christopher is alone and he has no memory. Slowly things come back to him, but not before he is confronted with a greater mystery – children are disappearing. For some reason he is determined to help, even if it puts himself and his friends, when they find him, in mortal danger. Plenty of danger and explosions and mystery.  Even some smart sword play and pirates.  Just one small problem for me --- how can Christopher have a mortal enemy (The Raven) and not encounter him in this book?  I got over it, because the adventure is so good, but that doesn’t stop me from wondering.
